I'm pleased to be working with two talented and well known international producers from Germany, Robert Natus (Abstract/Bitshift) and Arkus P (Abstract). I've been playing their music for the last 5 years and it will be a treat to have them perform in SF. In support will be myself (Catharsis), Mochipet (Daly City Records), DJ Intoner (Death Guild), Mitch (Death Guild), and Bloody Snowman (Daly City Records). This event will be a full night of quality music covering industrial-techno, breakcore, powernoise, and IDM.

Dwindling "goth club" scene in SF?

I'm posting this to DM, because some of you mad geniuses know a lot about the local "goth" and alterna club scene in SF.

I'm writing this in behalf of several people...

Some friends and I went to Pop Roxx (@ DNA lounge) last Fri and it sucked big time. The straw that broke the camel's back were the various rap and upbeat dancey and r&b tunes woven in, on both dance floors (upstairs and downstairs).

My friend voiced her dismay to the duo of DJ's upstairs and they pretty much told her to go fuck herself, adding that they get hired "all over the world," to play this shit.

Pop Roxx was a lot more "goth" last year, and earlier this year. It was not uncommon to hear a few good "industrial" and dark psy trancey type stuff there either. The musical ambiance was a lot "darker" overall than it seems to be currently.

It's really regressed, however, and the audience (mostly 20 somethings) seemed oblivious.

Anyway, me and five other people (all 30 somethings) were extremely disappointed and concurred about how much it sucked.

Also, Club Gossip (the new version of 1984 at the Cat Club) isn't nearly as dark and gritty as satisfying as the "old" 1984 was (Cat Club). Let's not even get into what's currently peddled as "1984" is like.

Also, the music at the old BAGG (@ the Cat Club) used to be good enough to dance to and one could even go strictly for the dancing option.
And now the music on the main dance floor pretty much sucks at BAGG and it doesn't stand alone in that respect.

It seems like the options are dwindling for people who are really into the "darker" aspect of goth/industrial/electro music.

Can anyone shed light on what's going on?

I had so much fun last night. I mean really, running a club is stressful and a lot of times you don't get to enjoy yourself. But last night was the kind of thing memories are made of. I can't wait to have grandchildren so I can tell them about:

-Shatter and I getting medieval on the toilet after SOMEBODY (anyone wanna fess up?) flushed a tampon. I remember after fixing it, Shatter and I were coming out of the bathroom together, all comraderie like, doing a high five. And this guy coming in gave us a really strange look. Sorry, dude, it wasn't what you thought.

-Someone from a well-known list site got in a heated argument with our genteel bartender, and was ejected, screaming something about destroying us (?!?) I somehow missed that one. But the story cracked me up.

-Trying to convince a female friend of mine that she should really try drinking urine now that she has a boyfriend.

-Someone threw up on the bar (I missed that one too, wtf?!?), promptly left, sobered up, and then came back to party with us for the rest of the night. You have no idea how much of a rockstar manouever that is. If you are reading this please introduce yourself to me next time, I want to shake your hand.

I guess some people would think that's a bad thing, but you know, nobody died and everyone I talked to was having so much fun. That's what this club is all about. And the music was great. Thanks, as always guys. Keep it coming.

A project that started out a few days ago as "put a few audio clips on the DM myspace page" has evolved into something a bit more interesting -- Radio Maschinen! You can find the beta version of it here:

Right now it loads a random playlist of 15 tracks from our database into the flash player every time you load the page. More features coming soon; Ideally I'd like to integrate it into the playlist section of the website.

Currently there's about 50 total tracks it picks from, but I've been adding a few each day, and the other DJs will be adding more soon. Also, so as not to bombard you with overplayed music you already own, I'm trying to keep it so that about 75% of the music is less than two years old.

Let's face it...no matter how much you may love the stompy-stompy or the swirly-swirl, there are some embarrassing lyrics to be found in the industrial/goth/EBM scene. Does anyone have any personal line, verse or chorus that just makes them crack up every time they hear it? Mine is probably:

That's from Front Line Assembly's "Flavour of the Weak" CD. I think Bill Leeb was trying to score a sponsorship from Johnson & Johnson at the time.

As with old Mystery Science Theater films, high-school poetry, and early Laibach videos, the more serious the original intent, the funnier it becomes....

Music- a diversion to the "scene" thread

So much of everything has to do with the music. So, I'll pose a few questions, and let's see what we can figure out vis discussion.

About me:

I come from a VERY metal background. The 80's to me was Exodus, Anthrax, Slayer, Judas Priest, Megadeth, Metallica, Motley Crew, Ozzy, Sabbath, etc etc etc. The late 80's was a VERY harsh time for me. Metal was ruined by Bon Jovi, Vinny Vincent, Poison, Cinderella, Winger. Glam metal hair bands. PITU! So I was looking fro something new. Listen to a lot of Live 105 because the company car only had am/fm. I was at a friends house, and he asked me "Hey, you heard this yet? It get's played on Live 105." (he was a wedge hair mod kid with a New oder poster on teh wall, but i still hung out with him). The tape was pretty hate Machine. "You also might like this, it's a little harsh for my tastes." (Ministry, Mind is a terrible thing).

Needless to say I didn't grab either one, cause I wasn't for borrowing things. I soon after got my first cd player (discman) and while shopping at the cool local music shop, saw the covers. So, I picked them up. Thus, I was introduced to Iindustrial. It had the harsh angry aggression, hard guitar licks, and kicked ass over any of this neo-metal crap that was all over TV. i was happy. From there it was Front Line Assembly, Front 242, KMFDM, Skinny Puppy (Rabies!), etc.

The whole Goth thing i never cared for. A small cluster of friends in High School were into Bauhaus. I always considered anyone into that crap to be a completely weird freak because almost over night they went from Joe Average to looking and talking like the south park goth kids. Over the years i got into some of the goth stuff, sisters of mercy, etc. Still, never been my thing i really got into, though I've always had a major hardon for Souixie. Then again, who doesn't?

Fastforward to recent years... This whole Synthpopish EBM thing. Is it the industrial I knew and loved? No. Could I get into it.. ya, totally. Why not? Good music is good music. I like Reagge and mod rock too. So what. I like what i like.

Over the years I've met some music purists. The music is what defines them as a person. They get into something (like the bauhaus kids) and let it totally take over their personality. They try too hard to be what the music it, and start creating all these walls, labels, genre's, etc. Everything neat and categorized. They will go out and buy EVERYTHING in that new thing they're into, and sell everything they used to like. You'll see them a few years later and once again they will have shrugged off what they were into for something else, usually a polar opposite.

I've never been that way. I'm a rivethead. Always have been, always will be. I wear black clothing because it's simple. I dont have to make sure nothing clashes. I wear boots because they're utilitarian, which i am to some extent. I wear Carhart logger pants because they are functional- work, riding the motorcycle (and yes, riding bikes is one thing, real rivetheads wrench their own rides), clubbing, yardwork. Whatever. I wear a hoodie because it's usually just warm enough for the city which is prone to being chilly. It's function, not fashion.

Again, I'm talking about me, not a scene. I sound like I'm rambling, but there's a point, and I'm getting to it. i just want to make sure the background is here so you get where I'm coming from, that it's not some flippant offhand statement.

If i can go from metal to Industrial (Kyron-5 will argue that i was into Coldwave and not REAL industrial), and now goth/industrial, Synthpop, Noize, DnB, Trance, Hard Trance, Dark/Psy-Trance (hello - combichirist!), and enjoy it all, STILL, to this day, why can't other people?

Why is the "scene" so divided on music? Goth stick their nose up at noize, rivetheads thing Cruxshadows are a bunch of pussies (and yes, they are), VNV is not industrial yet we ALL dance to it. All the kids (using the term loosely) despise and will clear a dance floor if a guitar loop is heard unless it's a "classic" (and must be Skinny Puppy, Revco, Ministry (pre-psalm69) PWEI [one song ONLY]) and then they will dance to show that they know more about the music than anyone else. Why can't they get into some 16 Volt, Hate Dept, KMFDM, etc.

What does make me laugh, is while they will get pissy about some guitar driven industrial, if I put on some psy-trance or DnB they get into it for some reasoon... Gravers? ;)

As for the DnB, I find it hysterical how that's now "Industrial". I remember when it was "Jungle". The Needleshharing and DJ Acukrack came around as industrial acts. Hate to break this to you, but it's 100% DnB. owever, as a bit of a music uru, i have some NiN official remioxes that were DnB back beats. perfect Drug comes to mind. Also, Lords of Aciid did some DnB before it has a name. If you doubt me, load of Voo Doo u and listen very carefully. You'll hear it.

Also, the last Cubenate CD that was released in '98 was pretty much 100% DnB. Now.. I'm digressing.

So... can anyway answer why we're so divided on music, why we will snub a club if the songs aren't 100% to what YOU would program or spin, why we care more about what track some asshat is playing in the DJ, and why we seem to have forgotten that clubs are a SOCIAL gathering, to hang out, meet new people, see friends, have a few drink, maybe get laid after.

I see this with other "scenes" i work with. They all don't really care if the music isn't perfect. In fact, they're happy to pay coover, sit around the club, get drunk, and bitch about how much the DJ sucks. f something better is happening at the same time, they'll all leave en masse, but that's rare. Most the time everyone is coming out to hang out at a place with like minded people and new faces.

This is how I always remembered the clubs when I was first going out.

i mean, can you imagine me dancing to Daisy Dukes (Duece) or WOOP! there it is (Tag Team) in a club? Ya. Well, i did. Didn't care much either if i looked like a retard doing it cause everyone else was. We were drinking and the girl got cuter as the night went on. Whatever.

So anyway.. discuss.

First off, I've got a CD release kit of the new CD from HexRx.

Despite what advertising said...

NO COVER ALL NIGHT (I didn't feel like dealing with money)

FREE DRINKS - Everyone who walked in (after I got teh tickets) got a free drink on the house

NO DRAMA! It was a fun night. The hip hop downstairs was a ghost town.

REFURBISHED SOUND SYSTEM - Glas Kat did some major work on the upstairs system and it sounded great. Pounded base with a full range of audio instead of the crappy system that was previously heard.

MAKITA - Yes, you missed Makita tearing it up in a set that amazed me and I've heard all his sets since day one.

Die Maschinen - you never know what kind of shinanigans we're gonna pull next.

They have offered us up the following Thursday to have DM...

i could set up for an underground this Saturday at the usual space.

We can't do both. So, I put it out to you, the Tribe. Which would you guys prefer? The 4th Saturday at the underground space will be on as planned, so we could have a 3rd Thursday or a 2nd Saturday.

Speaking of concerts, Dawn of Ashes is playing Feb 16th in Sacramento before jettisoning off to Florida, unfortunately no visit to SF this time. Their newest CD, In the Acts of Violence, is consistently excellent, beginning to end.

We're doing another underground event.

Consider yourselves warned.

OPEN DJ TIMES
Something new this month, is more spots for guests. We want more people who DJ industrial music to come out, get some deck time and have fun. If you're interested, contact Makita or I and we'll give you the info. All the residents will of course be there, and rumor has it our long lost brother PINKY will be doing a set this Saturday! Keep your fingers crossed that he doesn't forget what year this is.

Some issues have been brought up about the location. These items have been taken into consideration and addressed:

NEW SOUND SYSTEM- More speakers, more volume, more boom, less unwanted distortion.
NEW LIGHTING- Track lights, Black Lights, lasers and such. Good times!
REDESIGNED BAR- New layout, more space, more inviting

Over all, lots of changes and improvements. The place is looking better and better.

We'll be going from around 11pm until... well... whenever. We'll go as long as you guys can keep up with us.

I had a long talk with the manager of Glas Kat last night about the heavy handed pat downs.

Fact is that's pretty standard for all clubs, it's just that in the Goth/Industrial circles we tend to not get that because we know everyone.

Suffice it to say that won't happen again next month, even if I have to put myself out there checking ID's and bags.

You'll have to forgive my incoherence this morning, I'm still a bit dazed. I had started last night with some logistical concerns about space and our neighbors for the evening...but by 12:30 the place was firing and everyone was having a great time. Danny bartending, battle sets all around, people really into the music, it was a really great time. Seriously, I think that was one of the most fun nights I've had at Die Maschinen so far.
